    26.itissatisfactiontoamantodotheproperworksofaman.nowitisaproperworkofamantobebenevolenttohisownkind,todespisethemovementsofthesenses,toformajustjudgmentofplausibleappearances,andtotakeasurveyofthenatureoftheuniverseandofthethingswhichhappeninit.

    27.therearethreerelations[betweentheeandotherthings]:theonetothebodywhichsurroundsthee;thesecondtothedivinecausefromwhichallthingsetoall;andthethirdtothosewholivewiththee.

    28.painiseitheraneviltothebody—thenletthebodysaywhatitthinksofit—ortothesoul;butitisinthepowerofthesoultomaintainitsownserenityandtranquillity,andnottothinkthatpainisanevil.foreveryjudgmentandmovementanddesireandaversioniswithin,andnoevilascendssohigh.

    29.wipeoutthyimaginationsbyoftensayingtothyself:nowitisinmypowertoletnobadnessbeinthissoul,nordesire,noranyperturbationatall;butlookingatallthingsiseewhatistheirnature,andiuseeachaccordingtoitsvalue.—rememberthispowerwhichthouhastfromnature.

    30.speakbothinthesenateandtoeveryman,whoeverhemaybe,appropriately,notwithanyaffectation:useplaindiscourse.

    31.augustus’court,wife,daughter,descendants,ancestors,sister,agrippa,kinsmen,intimates,friends,areius,m?cenas,physiciansandsacrificingpriests—thewholecourtisdead.thenturntotherest,notconsideringthedeathofasingleman,[butofawholerace],asofthepompeii;andthatwhichisinscribedonthetombs—thelastofhisrace.thenconsiderwhattroublethosebeforethemhavehadthattheymightleaveasuccessor;andthen,thatofnecessitysomeonemustbethelast.againhereconsiderthedeathofawholerace.

    32.itisthydutytoorderthylifewellineverysingleact;andifeveryactdoesitsduty,asfarasispossible,becontent;andnooneisabletohindertheesothateachactshallnotdoitsduty.—butsomethingexternalwillstandintheway.—nothingwillstandinthewayofthyactingjustlyandsoberlyandconsiderately,butperhapssomeotheractivepowerwillbehindered.well,butbyacquiescinginthehindranceandbybeingcontenttotransferthyeffortstothatwhichisallowed,anotheropportunityofactionisimmediatelyputbeforetheeinplaceofthatwhichwashindered,andonewhichwilladaptitselftothisorderingofwhichwearespeaking.

    33.receive[wealthorprosperity]withoutarrogance;andbereadytoletitgo.

    34.ifthoudidsteverseeahandcutoff,orafoot,orahead,lyinganywhereapartfromtherestofthebody,suchdoesamanmakehimself,asfarashecan,whoisnotcontentwithwhathappens,andseparateshimselffromothers,ordoesanythingunsocial.supposethatthouhastdetachedthyselffromthenaturalunity—forthouwastmadebynatureapart,butnowthouhastcutthyselfoff—yetherethereisthisbeautifulprovision,thatitisinthypoweragaintounitethyself.godhasallowedthistonootherpart,afterithasbeenseparatedandcutasunder,toetogetheragain.butconsiderthekindnessbywhichhehasdistinguishedman,forhehasputitinhispowernottobeseparatedatallfromtheuniversal;andwhenhehasbeenseparated,hehasallowedhimtoreturnandtobeunitedandtoresumehisplaceasapart.

    35.asthenatureoftheuniversalhasgiventoeveryrationalbeingalltheotherpowersthatithas,sowehavereceivedfromitthispoweralso.forastheuniversalnatureconvertsandfixesinitspredestinedplaceeverythingwhichstandsinthewayandopposesit,andmakessuchthingsapartofitself,soalsotherationalanimalisabletomakeeveryhindranceitsownmaterial,andtouseitforsuchpurposesasitmayhavedesigned.

    36.donotdisturbthyselfbythinkingofthewholeofthylife.letnotthythoughtsatonceembraceallthevarioustroubleswhichthoumayestexpecttobefallthee:butoneveryoccasionaskthyself,whatisthereinthiswhichisintolerableandpastbearing?forthouwiltbeashamedtoconfess.inthenextplacerememberthatneitherthefuturenorthepastpainsthee,butonlythepresent.butthisisreducedtoaverylittle,ifthouonlycircumscribestit,andchidestthymind,ifitisunabletoholdoutagainsteventhis.

    37.doespantheaorpergamusnowsitbythetombofverus?doeschauriasordiotimussitbythetombofhadrianus?thatwouldberidiculous.well,supposetheydidsitthere,wouldthedeadbeconsciousofit?andifthedeadwereconscious,wouldtheybepleased?andiftheywerepleased,wouldthatmakethemimmortal?wasitnotintheorderofdestinythatthesepersonstooshouldfirstbeeoldwomenandoldmenandthendie?whatthenwouldthosedoaftertheseweredead?allthisisfoulsmellandbloodinabag.

    38.ifthoucanstseesharp,lookandjudgewisely,saysthephilosopher.

    39.intheconstitutionoftherationalanimaliseenovirtuewhichisopposedtojustice;butiseeavirtuewhichisopposedtoloveofpleasure,andthatistemperance.
